2026, June 6-16: 🇩🇪 Frankfurt, Munich & Beyond: Walk into History

📜 Rediscovering an Old Spark

Many years ago—well before Covid turned the world upside down—I set up this blog. Life got busy, and I completely forgot about it until I sat down recently to sort through the memories of my recent ten-day vacation. I hadn't even checked the old links I saved, but the spark for this trip had actually been lit a long time ago.

🏛️ A Shift in Historical Perspective

I have always thought of Germany as a country of deep contrasts: a place with a rich yet incredibly dark and cruel history, balanced by world-famous modern technology. Before leaving, my historical knowledge was pretty limited. I knew about the Nazi era, the separation of East and West, and the eventual reunification. The heavy, heartbreaking images from a past trip to Poland's concentration camps and stories like The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas were what stuck in my mind.

This trip changed everything. It opened my eyes and expanded my perspective tremendously, stretching my understanding all the way back 1,500 years to the Roman era! I am so glad I went; even if I didn't become an expert overnight, it certainly chipped away at my ignorance. I realized there is just so much more to see, do, and learn here than I ever imagined.

💖 Gratitude for my Travel Companion

Of course, this journey wouldn't have been possible without my wonderful travel companion, Ying Leng. While I was the one pushing to get the flights booked, I had absolutely zero time to actually map out the trip. Ying Leng stepped in and did the heavy lifting, sourcing brilliant hotels in both cities and figuring out our transportation. Neither of us had time to plan a day-by-day itinerary, but thanks to her, the absolute basics of Maslow's pyramid—our shelter and transit—were beautifully taken care of. Phew!

🗺️ The Fine Line Between Relaxing and Stressful

To be honest, even though this was supposed to be a completely relaxing trip to unwind, I felt a little stressed at first without a set schedule. After all, we couldn't just sit in the hotel the whole time!

🚉 Our Final Verdict on the Cities

In the end, the timing was a great learning experience. Three days in Frankfurt felt just right to take in the city. On the other hand, our six nights in Munich felt a bit like overkill—unless, of course, you plan to take a few day trips out into the beautiful surrounding countryside!

One day, somebody asked, "You travelled so often. What are the airlines that you've tried." I've never counted until today...
